My Top Tips and Products to combat Maskne✨

Posted on November 25, 2020, in: Blog

Let’s talk about Maskne as I know many people have or are struggling with there skin at moment.

And let’s be real it’s pants isn’t it.. so if we can try and combat Maskne and get that under control then atleast we are feeling more confident and fabulous about ourself during this weird and uncertain times.

Maskne- acne or other skin irritations that results from wearing a mask.

Why does wearing a mask cause skin issues you may ask?

➖ Humidity

While wearing a mask, the humidity and moisture created from our breath can change our skins PH level, which then leads to skin irritation.

➖ Friction

The constant rubbing and friction from your mask against your skin can lead to chafing, Irritation and redness.

➖Dirt and Bacteria

Wearing a mask can trap dirt, oil and bacteria against your skin and then clogs your pores.

Unfortunately they combination of these three things (dirt, oil and bacteria) creates the perfect environment for breakouts and acne. However there are measures we can do to combat Maskne.

✨How to prevent Maskne-

Avoid make up-

Due to the increased humidity created from the mask, wearing make up under your mask can clog pores and worsen breakouts. Why not use this time to give the lower half of your face where your mask would be and enhance your brows and eyes! Make these your statement features.

Wear or purchase a silk face covering-

The soft texture of the silk is soft and gentle against your skin and also the breathable fabric reduces humidity from your breath! (You can thank me later)

Silk is also known for having antibacterial properties preventing bacteria from developing on your skin.

Cleanse before and after wearing a mask.

Just like you wash your hands before and after wearing your mask you should also try and get into the routine of washing your face too. This will help remove any dead skin cells, oil or dirt that has built up on your skin.

Moisturise

With the constant rubbing of the face mask against your skin this can damage your skins natural barrier, making it vulnerable to inflammation and irritation. Using a good moisturiser will help to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. If you don’t moisturise, your skin it is likely to make more oil to compensate. This will result in clogging pores. So if you have oily skin, moisturising is key!🔑

Wash your face mask!

I’m so guilty of this, the inside of my face mask is embarrassing🤦🏼‍♀️

You are supposed to wash your face mask after ever use this helps to prevent the spread of covid and also bacteria that can build up inside. Washing your mask will remove all the oils and skin cells collected inside the mask which all contribute to Maskne.

Product recommendations-

These are purely what I have found helped me and might be completely different for you.

CereVe Smoothing Cleanser

A hydrating cleanser which removed dirt, oil and make up while replenishing and reinforcing your skins natural barrier.

This contains Salicylic Acid (0.5%) allows the cleansing formula to preform a chemical and gentle exfoliation, gently dissolving dead skin and pore clogging impurities.

Ole Henriksen Dark Spot Toner

One of my friends recommended this to me when I said I was struggling with my skin and I’ve been hooked ever since. It honestly leaves your skin feeling so so fresh.

This face toner targets dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles, brightens and smoothes texture. (What more could you want from a toner?)

Tone after you have cleansed and you’ll be perfectly prepped and ready for your last step.. moisturise.

Dermalogica Clear Start hydrating lotion

This is a lightweight moisturiser for skin prone to breakouts.

Having trained with Dermalogica and becoming a specialist I have always loved their products specially the clear start range!

This super lightweight moisturiser is easy to apply and immediately gets to work soothing and hydrating your skin. This is also perfect if you get any dryness from the acne treatments as some of the products can often leave the skin feeling dry and tight. This is absolutely perfect to give it back the moisture you might feel your skin is lacking.

I hope you have found these tips helpful, like I stated at the beginning this is all what I have found works for me so could and might be completely different to your skin type/ needs. With Christmas round the corner what a great time to add these onto your wish list and see what works best for you.
